WRITING PROBLEMS- DESCRIPTIONS

To understand descriptions we need to examine how adjectives seat properly.

The crucial thing is to study the order of adjectives when describing scenes, people or EVENTS.

The adjective order in English is:

• Quantity or number
• Quality or opinion
• Size
• Age
• Shape
• Color
• Proper adjective (often nationality, other place of origin, or material)
• Purpose or qualifier

Let’s use some examples from the BOOK Becoming Michelle Obama

 

FOR DESCRIBING THINGS
… Sat hidden behind massive wrought-iron gate… (Massive-Size; wrought-iron -qualifier)

FOR DESCRIBING PEOPLE
… Ann a plump, lively woman with dark frizzy hair and same angular chin… (Plump- Size; Lively- Qualifier)

FOR DESCRIBING EMOTIONS
… His Voice bore no trace of pain…only good humour and softness and just the tiniest hint of Jazz… (Good – Opinion; tiniest- size)
